Holi – the festival of colours is here! The time when you put all rules on hold and let the child within loose, playing with colours, dancing on paan banaras wala, and simply soaking up the sun as you gorge on gujias and gulp down the thandai. As you get ready to have all the fun, make sure that your skin is well protected, so that you do not suffer from any after effects like skin allergies or irritation after the game is over.

Traditionally, the festival was all about natural colours made from flowers and herbs. But these days there are many varieties of cheap and synthetic colours available in the market made from chemicals, and artificial dyes. They could also contain heavy metals, acids, mica, glass powder and dangerous alkalis. These chemicals can cause serious harm to the skin. It is a great idea to play with natural colours and herbs like tesu or genda flowers, rose petals, haldi and sandalwood that are actually good for your skin.

If you are going out and not sure about the colours others will use, make sure make sure that you oil your entire body with coconut oil. You can also use Olive oil or Vitamin E oil if you prefer. While oiling, make sure you do not forget places like behind the ear, between finger tips and near the finger nails where paint is bound to collect. You can oil your hair with mustard oil and tie it in a plait or pony. If you’ve been wanting to experiment with nail colour, here’s your chance to go wild. Paint your nails with the darkest shade possible to avoid the Holi colour from seeping inside the nail bed.

After you have had all the fun with colours and can hardly recognize yourself in the mirror, it is now time to get back to your normal self. If you are wondering how you will ever get rid of all those stubborn colours, worry not. Here are few tips to cleanse your skin and get back that glow safely.

1. Stand in running water for 5-10 minutes after playing Holi, and ensure that you do not scrub or scratch aggressively.

2. Apply liquid soap gently on the body. Still struggling? You can try home remedies thereafter, such as applying a mix of lemon juice, curd and sandalwood. You can also apply a mix of turmeric and white flour, and wash off after 15-20 minutes with milk. The trick with white flour works wonders for the face.

3. Be extra careful while removing the Holi colours from your face. It is ideal to use olive oil to remove the colour. Dab some, leave it on for a few minutes and then wash off.

4. A concoction of fresh lemon juice, curd and a pinch of sandalwood powder is great to remove those stubborn traces of colour from your body and get back the glow.

5. However, if there are still some traces of colour, then remember to give it a couple of days to fade away naturally rather than scrubbing away aggressively and harming your skin in the process. It is advisable not to use body scrubs, exfoliators or bath salts for at least 48 hours after playing Holi, and try not to go out in the sun for too long.

Bezos’ Blue Origin Signs Eutelsat as Its First Rocket Customer

After years of relying almost exclusively on Jeffrey P. Bezos’s fortune, Blue Origin now has a paying customer that will bring in a precious resource that has been scarce in the company’s 17-year existence: revenue.

At a satellite conference Tuesday morning, Bezos announced that Eutelsat Communications, a French-based satellite company, has signed on to be the first customer of Blue Origin’s New Glenn orbital rocket, which is under development but slated to fly by the end of the decade. (Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, owns The Washington Post.)

The deal marks a significant milestone in the growth of the company, which for years had remained obsessively secretive. Bezos has said he has poured more than $500 million (roughly Rs. 3,332 crores) of his own money into it – but has received relatively little outside revenue.

But recently Blue Origin has stepped into the spotlight – as a sponsor of the satellite conference, its banners and logos are all over the Walter E. Washington Convention Center – and it is starting to accelerate its activities. It is working to revamp a launch complex at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, while also building a massive rocket manufacturing facility nearby.

Blue Origin’s entrance into the commercial satellite market would put it in competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has been flying satellites for commercial companies for years.

“I think this is a sign that the industry has actually got some legs that both of these companies are going to be moving forward,” said Todd Harrison, an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.Bezos' Blue Origin Signs Eutelsat as Its First Rocket Customer

The mission to launch Eutelsat’s satellite to geostationary orbit would come in 2021 or 2022.
Scott Pace, the director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, noted that Blue Origin probably would be competing against Arianespace, a French launch company.

“While there is a significant risk in using a new vehicle, satellite operators have shown that they want a diverse range of suppliers and not be tied to just one or two launch providers. Thus they will practice ‘strategic sourcing’ to ensure competitive alternatives,” Pace said.

During a 23-minute question-and-answer session Tuesday, Bezos offered some new details about New Glenn, named after the late John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth. The rocket’s first stage, or booster, is designed to be reusable. Once it delivers its payload to orbit, it would then fly back to Earth, landing on a ship at sea – a feat that SpaceX has been performing for about a year.

The New Glenn would be outfitted with strakes, or aerodynamic fins, to help fly the booster back to Earth without having to refire the engine. He also said that the rocket’s BE-4 engines are designed to fly as many as 100 times. (Traditionally rockets dumped into the ocean after delivering their payload to orbit.)

“Our goal, and we won’t stop until we achieve it, is to dramatically lower launch costs,” Bezos said. “It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to take time. But we when we do achieve that goal, it will grow the entire industry. We’ll reach a new equilibrium in this industry.”

Blue Origin has also pitched NASA on a public-private partnership to fly cargo and science experiments to the surface of the moon, a mission it has dubbed Blue Moon.

This year, it plans to begin crewed test flights of its suborbital New Shepard rocket. By next year, it could start flying paying tourists on trips that would cross the 62-mile barrier that’s considered the edge of space.

1. Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend Pose)

This intense stretching pose is known to relieve stress and reduce fatigue by calming your brain nerves. It is also great for treating headaches and insomnia that can hamper your sleep. Stand straight with your feet apart. Raise your hands above your shoulders and stretch gently. Then, fold your torso reaching towards the ground. Keep your knees straight. You can decide to place your palms on the ground (in front of your feet or next to them) or wrap them around your ankles. If it’s not possible, then cross your forearms and hold your elbows. Press your heels into the floor and keep your head and chest in. Now, as you inhale, stretch your front torso slightly and while exhaling emphasize on the forward bend. Hold the pose for about 30 seconds, release and then gently come back to the standing position.

2. Viparita Karani (Leg Up The Wall Pose)

This asana is a restorative pose which means it improves your blood circulation. Find a wall and sit in front of it with your feet on the floor. Place a support like a bolster or a cushion under your lower back about half a foot away from the wall. Exhale and gently lie on your back stretching your legs against the wall such that the back of your legs press against the wall and your soles are facing upwards. Keep your sit bones as close to the wall as you can. Look up with your face and chin in one line. Open your arms sideways, lengthen your neck and keep your legs firm. If you do not wish to use the support, you can use your hands to support your hips and rise forming a curve in your body. With the help of a support, you can stay in this pose for as long as 5 minutes.

3. Virasana (Hero Pose)

This asana is basically a meditative pose. It really helps you in calming you down and makes you physically and emotionally stable. It also helps in relieving tired legs.  Kneel down on the floor, with your knees bent and your legs folded underneath you. Let your hand rest on your thighs or you can also fold them in front of your chest. Bring your knees close so that the gap between your feet automatically widens. It should be wider than the width of your hips. The top of your feet should be flat on the floor and your spine should be straight. If you feel too much pressure on your knees, you can place a pillow between your calves and thighs. Hold the position for 30 seconds.

While you are in the sitting positions, it stimulates the pressure points on your feet that help in relaxing your whole body.  You can also use this position to meditate and breathe deeply. It instills a sense of quiet while making you aware of your mental state.

4. Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

Regarded as the ‘mother of asanas’, tadasana is like the base from which all the poses emerge. This steady and concentrated posture of the pose can really help calm the mind. Stand straight with your feet slightly apart. Keep your hands hanging by your side. Make your thigh muscles firm and slightly turn them inwards while lifting your knee cap. Lengthen your tailbone and imagine a line of energy passing through your body. Lift your chest up and out and push your shoulder blades back. Keep breathing deeply. While inhaling, you will feel the breath travelling through your toes, stomach and up to the head. As you exhale, feel your breath going down from the head to the stomach and finally your feet. You can concentrate on a spot in front of you to avoid any distraction. This helps in increasing your mental awareness.

A word of caution: Yoga expert Ajit suggests that these poses should not be performed right before you get into bed. Perform them in the evening, probably before dinner on an empty stomach. Also, just before you prepare to sleep you should meditate for about 5 minutes focusing on your breath to calm your senses and sleep peacefully.

Amazon Alexa Voice Assistant Now Available on iPhone

 

Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant is now available on the iPhone. As you may have guessed, it’s not going to replace Siri anytime soon. This is because Alexa is baked into the Amazon app and there’s no way to map it to the Home Button on your iPhone.

This feature is currently only available for Amazon users in the US, although those in other regions can access it by changing country to US in the app. You can do this by – Settings > Country & Language > Country > United States. Smarteefi Wi-Fi Smart Power Strip Review

 

At first glance, the Smarteefi SE315A Power Strip looks like any other spike buster, which is an under-appreciated but essential part of every PC user’s life. The average techie probably needs one in every room to have enough outlets for a smartphone, laptop, PC, router, etc. The Smarteefi, manufactured by Delhi-based startup CoreEmbedded Technologies, is an entry-level home automation solution which lets users remotely toggle power to three plug points, while implementing conventional surge protection features.

A Wi-Fi router and a live Internet connection are necessary for the device, which lets users control appliances plugged in to it through an Android app or a Web dashboard on the Smarteefi website. It should take about ten minutes to set up the power strip. The manual details step-by-step instructions concisely, and practically anyone with basic tech knowledge should be able set this up.

In a gist, you need to activate a setup mode on the power strip after turning it on, following which it shows up as a Wi-Fi access point. You then log in into the device through a Web browser (using the default IP 192.168.4.1), and enter the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password of your existing Wi-Fi network. Hit save and toggle back to normal mode, after which the Smarteefi SE315A should be connected to your router, making it accessible from your other computing devices and anywhere else through the Internet.

Once the LED indicator shows a stable green, each plug on the power strip can be controlled remotely. We managed to nail the setup process on the first try and don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to do so too. The Smarteefi SE315A is 13 inches long; size of a standard power strip but about 10 percent thicker and with one less socket than a regular spike buster. The unit has slots on the back to enable wall mounting. It consumes 0.45W of power in standby, which is up to four times the power consumption of a typical smartphone in sleep mode.

The company says that it takes security seriously. Communication from the Smarteefi SE315A to and from its cloud service is encrypted using 128-bit AES, and communication between the cloud and the app is encrypted using SSL.

Configuring the app takes a few minutes, starting with registration, following which users can add their Smarteefi power strip by entering its serial number and activation code, which are printed on the bottom of the unit.

LED indicators on the power strip show which mode it is in – if it’s blue, the power strip is in setup mode; if it’s blinking green, the power strip is too far away from the router or there’s a password issue. Red denotes that the strip has trouble connecting to the cloud. The board also has physical switches for each of the power outlets, which emit a blue LED light when turned on.

The Smarteefi Android app is minimal but effective. It offers no bells and whistles apart from scheduling, which can be used to turn power to any of the three universal outlets on or off on a daily or weekly schedule. Scheduled events on the app aren’t synced with the cloud, which means that your Android device needs to be online with the app running in the background at the scheduled time, in order to send commands. On the other hand, you do get notifications when scheduled events are carried out successfully or if they fail. The app doesn’t have features like IFTTT integration, though the company is working on a way to send push notifications to your phone when the physical switches on the power strip are used.

You can also control your Smarteefi power strip through any device that supports a Web browser, through this interface lacks the ability to create schedules. There’s no app for iOS devices yet, but it’s on the company’s to-do list, with a planned launch date of June 2016.
CoreEmbedded Technologies has decided to go with only three sockets, which seems like a limitation at this point – a four- or six-socket model would have been more appealing. The company says that it wanted the product to look and feel just like a standard power strip, which dictated its final dimensions. Vipin Galhaut, CEO of the firm, told Gadgets 360 that he has received orders from industries for similar power strips with eight sockets, and he sees no reason to turn customers away. Versions with more sockets are in the pipeline, but the next product is going to be a controller that can fit behind an existing switchboard, he said.

Three plug points are still enough to automate simple activities – plug in a coffee maker, toaster oven and kettle, and you can have a full breakfast ready for you as you wake up. The Smarteefi SE315A can support a total power draw of up to 5 Amperes before its over-current safety protection is triggered, so you could plug multiple small devices into each socket if you want them all on or off at the same time.

Users can have any number of these connected power strips in their homes, all controlled individually through the same interface. If you have an inverter at home, the Smarteefi SE315A can help you reduce load by turning off devices that you don’t need to run on batteries. The ability to turn off a TV, PC or game console remotely could be of use to parents (though any kid should be able to find a simple workaround – just flip the switch to setup mode, and the device is cut off from your router, disabling remote access).

The Smarteefi SE315A can’t be operated without an Internet connection, since all commands are routed through the cloud. Any ISP downtime or power failure will interrupt your ability to use it, which could be dangerous in cases where you need to turn something off at a particular time. Its lifecycle is also dependent on the company that manufactures it. For example, Revolv, a US-based IoT player which was acquired by Google, will stop supporting its devices, rendering them inoperable after May 15, 2016. Galhaut told Gadgets 360 that his three-year-old company is in this space for the long haul, with more devices in the pipeline. Its cloud service has an uptime of 99.9 percent, barring scheduled upgrades for major releases, he said.

The Smarteefi’s SE315A’s use cases are limited when compared to the Inoho’s 5.1 home controller, priced at Rs. 11,999, which sits behind a switchboard and can be used to control electrical fittings and regulate fan speed as well. That’s the space the company is looking to set target next. For now the Smarteefi SE315A complements such a solution by Internet-enabling appliances that need a plug point.

The Smart EEFI SE315A Power Strip is affordable, though much more expensive than ordinary power strips. It’s intriguing for anyone looking to add some basic task automation to their day, and is something that every broadband-using geek would love. It could also be useful for the elderly and anyone with impaired mobility. Add a couple of multi-plug adapters, and its three sockets won’t feel so limiting. However, it should be used only for convenience, not for any appliance or product that could be dangerous if you suddenly lose the ability to turn it on or off when you need to.

Chandigarh: Panjab University hikes fee by up to Rs 82,000 a year

 A year after hiking the fee by 5%, Panjab University (PU) senate on Sunday approved an average of 12.5% fee hike for all courses of university departments and its regional centres for the session 2017-18, on Sunday. However, the fee for some courses has multiplied by several times.The decision means that from the new academic session starting July, the tuition fee will see a minimum increase of Rs 2,000 and a maximum increase of approximately Rs 82,000 depending on the course. Students of courses like BPharma, who were paying Rs 5,000, will now pay Rs 50,000.

A Bachelors in Arts or Commerce will pay Rs 10,000 against the Rs 2,200 now.

The MA in journalism has also become dearer by six times to Rs 30,000.

PU vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover justified the fee hike stating that it was nominal considering the financial condition of the varsity.

SUB-COMMITTEE TO FINALISE DETAILS

The fee hike was approved, in principle, with a sub-committee authorised to finalise the details as well as formulation of scheme of concession for students belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) after the implementation of the fee hikePanjab University

ONLY APPLICABLE FOR STUDENTS ADMITTED AFRESH

The new fee structure shall be applicable only to the students admitted afresh in academic session 2017-18. For existing students, the existing fee structure would be applicable after allowing an increase of 5% on tuition fee.

This will also be subject to a minimum increase of Rs 500 and maximum Rs 1,200.

In the last syndicate meeting, the V-C had stated that the Think Tank committee formed to look into the financial concerns of the varsity had recommended enhancement in internal revenue by 20% in 2017-18

FEE CONCESSIONS

The varsity also approved a number of fee concession schemes for all courses (other than self-financed in which scheme of freeship is already there).

For instance, students who have studied and qualified their Class-12 examination from a government school or government aided school with annual family income up to Rs 5 lakh will be eligible for fee concessions up to 50% of the tuition fee.

 

Stem Cell Therapy May Help Treat Lung Inflammation and Damage

Those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can now seek alternative therapy to reduce their lung inflammation. According to a recent study, stem cell therapy may potentially help in repairing lung damage in patients with cystic fibrosis and COPD. Experts at Queens University Belfast, UK investigated the effectiveness of Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy in a mouse model of chronic inflammatory lung disease. Chronic inflammation in conditions such as COPD and cystic fibrosis leads to inflammation, lung damage and reduced lung function which may often result in respiratory failure.

Stem cells were intravenously administered to mice at four and six weeks of age. Sample tissue and cells were then collected from their lungs at about eight weeks. As a result, it was found that the inflammation was significantly reduced in the group receiving MSC therapy as compared to the group of mice that didn’t receive the therapy. Cell count for both monocytic cells and neutrophils – signs of inflammation – were significantly reduced after MSC therapy, researchers said.

On investigating the lung tissue, it was revealed that the mean linear intercept and other measures of lung destruction had reduced in MSC treated mice. MSC therapy also resulted in significant improvements in lung structure, suggesting that this form of treatment has the potential to repair damaged lung.

Stem Cell Therapy May Help Treat Lung Inflammation and Damage: Study

“These preliminary findings demonstrate the potential effectiveness of MSC treatment as a means of repairing the damage caused by chronic lung diseases such as COPD,” said Declan Doherty, Queens University Belfast.

“The ability to counteract inflammation in the lungs by utilizing the combined anti-inflammatory and reparative properties of MSCs could potentially reduce the inflammatory response in individuals with chronic lung disease whilst also restoring lung function in these patients,” Doherty added.

MSC therapy is currently being investigated as a promising therapeutic approach for a number of incurable, degenerative lung diseases.
