Xiaomi Redmi 3S Plus is Company’s First Offline Retail-Only Phone for India

Image result for Mobiles News Xiaomi Redmi 3S Plus is Company's First Offline Retail-Only Phone for IndiaXiaomi is ready to unveil the Redmi 3S Plus, its first offline retail-only phone for the Indian market, Gadgets 360 has learnt from its sources. The Redmi 3S Plus is identical to the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime, except for the fact it comes with 2GB of RAM. The phone, which will run MIUI 8 out of the box, will carry an MRP of Rs. 9,499, and a best buy price of Rs. 8,799. Retailers across the country have started receiving their Redmi 3S Plus units, and the phone is expected to officially go on sale from Saturday.

Just like the Redmi 3S and the Redmi 3S Prime, the Redmi 3S Plus will come with a 5-inch 720p display and be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC. All three phones sport a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front shooter. Just like the Redmi 3S Prime, the Redmi 3S Plus will come with a fingerprint scanner and 32GB of storage, but like we mentioned earlier, it comes with 2GB of RAM, as seen on the Redmi 3S.

If that sounds confusing, we don’t blame you, and most people will see the Redmi 3S Plus as a needless complication, since it makes sense to spend a little extra and get the Redmi 3S Prime in any case. But the Redmi 3S Plus can be seen as Xiaomi’s attempt to further expand its offline presence in the country. Having an offline-only model means retailers will enjoy flexibility on pricing and be able to pass that benefit on to customers, as evident by the “best buy price” for the Redmi 3S Plus, while all other Xiaomi phones are sold at MRP, even offline. An offline-only phone also means that retailers don’t need to worry about competing with online sales and cash backs, at least for that specific model.
Like we mentioned before, the phone may not make sense to those who already have access to online channels, but the retailers Gadgets 360 spoke to are pretty excited about the prospects of the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Plus, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Shipments Delayed in India

Image result for Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Shipments Delayed in IndiaSamsung India is informing customers who pre-booked a Galaxy Note 7 that shipments of the smartphone will be delayed. This comes in after Samsung was reported to be getting ready to announce a worldwide recall of Galaxy Note 7 handsets due to a few complaints of the smartphone exploding while on charge.

Gadgets 360 has learnt that Samsung India has sent a message to customers who pre-booked a Note 7 informing them about the delay, though no reason was given. The message reads, “Thank you for pre-booking Galaxy Note 7. We regret to inform that delivery of your Galaxy Note 7 is being delayed. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. You can be assured that we are working hard to deliver your Galaxy Note 7 to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”

We’ve reached out to Samsung India for a statement and will update this report as and when we hear from them.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 exploding issue has been traced back to a battery fault, and the problematic battery is apparently only in 0.1 percent of the entire Note 7 units sold. In any case, Samsung claims that the safety of the customers is their top priority, and countermeasures will be announced sometime early next week.
Earlier this week, Samsung Global also announced delay in shipments as the firm needed to conduct additional quality control tests for the Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 earlier than usual this year, in a bid to fend off competition from Apple. This issue and the possible need to recall handsets could not have come at a worse time for Samsung as Apple’s iPhone 7 launch event is just a few days away.

In India, Samsung launched the dual-SIM variant of Galaxy Note 7 at Rs. 59,900, and took pre-orders till August 30.

Sony Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact Press Renders Leak Ahead of IFA 2016 Launch

Sony Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact Press Renders Leak Ahead of IFA 2016 LaunchSony will be holding its IFA event on Thursday, set to start at 4:30pm IST, and the company is widely expected to launch its smartphones Xperia X Compact and Xperia XZ. Ahead of the company’s event, several press renders of the alleged two smartphones have been leaked on the internet and show the devices in all their glory.

As per the press renders leaked by Xperia Blog, the smartphones seem to be in line with earlier leaks as they are expected to pack USB Type-C port as well as curved edges. The leaked renders show that the smartphones will be carrying a number of sensors on its camera panel.

Earlier leaks suggested that Xperia X Compact will feature a 4.6-inch display, will be powered by a Snapdragon 820 SoC, either 3GB or 4GB of RAM. The device is rumoured to come with a 2700mAh battery.

Some reports have also suggested that the Xperia XZ is in fact the Xperia XR that was rumoured earlier – complete with specifications.
If this is indeed true, Xperia XZ should feature a 5.1-inch display, and will be powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor. With this smartphone, Sony is also expected to finally make the switch to USB Type-C ports. There is also a pegged dual-LED flash module coming next to the rear camera, and the dimensions are tipped at 146.4×71.9×8.1mm.

In the meanwhile, GSMArena points to a tipster to suggest the Xperia X Compact and Xperia XZ will become available starting September 24.

Indian Tablet Market Grew 14.4 Percent in Q2 2016

Indian Tablet Market Grew 14.4 Percent in Q2 2016: IDC

  • Shipments grew 14.4 percent over previous quarter
  • Three-fourth of tablets sold in India are below $150
  • Datawind maintained its top position with 27.5 percentage share in Q2

Buoyed by purchases in the commercial segment, the Indian tablet market registered a 14.4 percent growth in the second quarter of 2016, recovering somewhat from a sluggish first quarter, a report said on Friday.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), tablet shipments in India (inclusive of slate and detachables) was 0.98 million units in the second quarter.

Shipments grew 14.4 percent over previous quarter while dipped 5.6 percent over the same period last year.

“Tablet market declined as consumer market receded by 12.5 percent year-on-year in Q2 2016, while commercial segment continues to grow at a healthy rate indicating clear shift in the focus of the market,” said Karthik J, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India.

Approximately three-fourth of tablets sold in India are below $150 (roughly Rs. 10,000) and driven primarily by local vendors like Datawind, iBall and Micromax followed by Lenovo.

Samsung dominated the mid $150-350 segment while the premium $300 (roughly Rs. 20,000) and above segment continues to be dominated by Apple, driven primarily by iPad Air 2.

Datawind maintained its top position with 27.5 percentage share in the second quarter.

Samsung sustained the second position with vendor share of 14.7 percentage.

“Detachables are seeing better uptake compared to convertibles owing to the reason that convertibles are relatively premium priced while detachables are able to effectively bridge the price and functionality gap between tablets and entry level notebooks,” Karthik noted.

Tablet shipments are expected to grow sequentially as the festive season approaches.

“However, overall 2016 tablet shipments are expected to decline marginally this year as ramp of commercial segment is not enough to offset the consumer segment decline,” added Navkendar Singh, Senior Research Manager, Mobile Devices Research, IDC India and South Asia.

iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus Sales on Track to Beat Last Year’s Record

Apple said sales of its new iPhone models were on pace to beat the 10 million unit sales it logged during the first weekend of sales last year.

The company did not disclose the specific number of pre-orders it received. Analysts had expected the company to log about 4.5 million pre-orders, in comparison with 4 million during the same period last year. Last year, Apple had said pre-orders had exceeded its initial supply.

The company said demand for iPhone 6s Plus, the larger phone, exceeded its forecasts for the pre-order period. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will begin shipping September 25.

The phones feature improved cameras and 3D Touch, a display technology that responds differently depending on how hard users press their screens.

Apple is also expected to see record sales due to its new upgrade program. The company made buying a new iPhone every year more affordable – a move that analysts said will drive demand from now on, starting with the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Apple announced a program that will allow users to finance unlocked versions of the new iPhone models through monthly instalments starting at $32 (roughly Rs. 2,100), regardless of carrier.

Until now, customers could only lease subsidised phones on two-year contracts requiring an up-front payment. The deal for iPhone owners, which will initially apply to the United States and 11 other key markets including China, emerged as one of the most positive announcements at Apple’s annual launch event.

Microsoft Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL Flagships to Launch on October 10

Rumours about two new smartphone flagships from Microsoft named the Lumia 950 (codenamed Talkman) and the Lumia 950 XL (codenamed Cityman) have been floating around for many months, and now it seems they are absolutely ready for a launch. According to a new report however, Microsoft will be taking wraps off the said handsets on October 10. The launch month is also in line with a recentreport.

Prolific tipster Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) claims Microsoft plans to launch the Window 10 Mobile-basedLumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL on October 10. Blass further noted that both the handsets will sport polycarbonate shells instead of their rumoured metal bodies.

As for the leaked specifications, which have been reiterated by multiple sources over the past few months, the Lumia 950 sports a 5.2-inch QHD display and is powered by Snapdragon 808 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and a 3,000mAH battery. The Lumia 950 XL, on the other hand, is said to equip a 5.7-inch QHD display, and is powered by a Snapdragon 810 chipset coupled with 3GB of RAM. Both the handsets are reportedly going to have a 21-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel selfie sensor.

What Blass hasn’t talked about is whether the company will also refresh its Surface lineup with rumoured new Surface tablet, and its wearable fitness tracker the Microsoft Band at the same event. Also it isn’t clear whether the rumoured Surface Mobile exists and is ready for the global unveil yet.

With Microsoft significantly toning down on its Windows Phone efforts, the aforementioned handsets hold the future of the company’s mobile operating system – Windows 10 Mobile.
