Polycystic ovary disorder (PCOD) is a cause of major concern for many women. Caused by hormonal imbalance and cysts in the ovaries, the disorder causes issues like irregular or no menstrual periods, pelvic pain, and may also lead to difficulties getting pregnant. But not all patients with PCOD have all of these symptoms. It is also important to note that PCOD is not the same as PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). We asked Dr Hrishikesh Pai, Medical Director at Bloom IVF Center, about things one should take care of if you are diagnosed with PCOD.
– Maintaining a planned diet is essential. “Consume a healthy and balanced diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, oil-rich fish, whole grains, and lean meat. Plan your meals in advance so that they are inclusive of all nutrient components. Make sure to eat at regular intervals as this will avoid cravings and overeating,” says Dr Pai. “Limit the intake of processed foods, and sugary and starchy items because they can worsen the symptoms of PCOD.”
– It is also important that women suffering from PCOD keep their weight in check. “Even a little difference of 0.5 kg to 1 kg in weight can help manage the symptoms,” says Dr Pai. “Make sure to get about 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Include some moderately intense exercises in your schedule. This will also help in regularizing periods and improve your chances of conception.”
– Stress is a major cause of concern for those with PCOD. “One of the major risk factors that can exacerbate PCOD symptoms is stress. Under acute stress, the body releases an excess of male hormones which can lead to insulin resistance and eventually Type-2 diabetes,” says Dr Pai. “Practice relaxation techniques, meditate, and get adequate rest and sleep to bring down stress levels.”
– Another relaxation technique that can be tried is yoga. “Doing yoga as some breathing techniques and asanas can help in managing PCOD-related symptoms,” advised Dr Pai. “There are some specific yogasanas, which benefit the pelvic area by improving blood circulation and flexibility. Pranayama can help in calming the mind by alleviating negativity and depression.”
